The numbers are in and it’s painting a green picture of Pocatello residents.
During November 2015, the City of Pocatello Sanitation Department conducted a setout study of the City’s curbside recycling program. Officials found that 9,085 of the City’s 12,955 recycling autocarts were picked up during the month, a setout rate of 70 percent.
“We’re thrilled with these numbers,” said Debbie Brady, Recycling Coordinator with the City of Pocatello. “To know that 7 out of 10 of our program participants are utilizing this service is great news for the City and the environment. We’ve taken a look around the nation and found curbside recycling programs have experienced setout rates well below 70 percent.”
The setout study data will help officials plan future modifications to the program. The study also weighed each autocart to find an average weight per autocart. Officials found that just under 39 pounds of recycling were making it to the blue container.
The November study was the first for the City and Brady says the plan is to do setout counts quarterly in 2016. In addition to the nearly 13,000 recycling autocarts, the Sanitation Department is responsible for disposing of the contents of 20,055 garbage autocarts and 600 yard waste autocarts.
