At Thursday’s Pocatello City Council meeting, Mayor Brian Blad will issue a proclamation declaring the week of February 8 to February 14, 2016 as Clergy Appreciation Week.
The proclamation was requested by the Bannock Civitan Club, Civitan Twister Stitchers Club, Junior Civitan Club, and Friends Civitan Club of Pocatello and recognizes clergy of all faiths and their efforts to make the community a better place to live.
Specifically, the proclamation highlights the efforts of the four chaplains aboard the sinking USS Dorchester in 1943. The chaplains helped other soldiers to life boats after the ship was torpedoed by a German submarine, giving up their own life jackets so that others could live. Since that time, the men have been referred to as the “Immortal Chaplains.”
The meeting is set to begin at 6 p.m.
