Pocatello Historic Preservation Comm. Seeks Volunteers for Veteran Headstone Cleaning Effort

A group of local history buffs is asking for the public’s help in honoring our nation’s fallen veterans.

Tuesday, May 8 at 6 p.m., the Pocatello Historic Preservation Commission will be leading an effort to clean the headstones of soldiers interred at Mountain View Cemetery. Residents interested in helping with the effort are encouraged to attend and, if able, bring pumice stones, kitchen scrub brushes, rubber gloves, buckets, soft towels/cloths, and razor blades.

“There are veterans from as far back as the Spanish-American War buried at Mountain View Cemetery,” said Terri Neu, City of Pocatello Staff Liaison to the Historic Preservation Commission.

Using a list compiled by commission member Jacquee Alvord, volunteers will begin by cleaning some of the oldest headstones in the cemetery. From there, the group will move up the list cleaning as many as possible.

“While the battles some of these soldiers fought happened over a century ago, we would like to recognize their service as well as the service of others and make sure their final resting place is befitting,” Neu said.

Training on how to properly clean the headstones will be provided and those who are interested are asked to meet at Brady Chapel.
