This project consists of the rehabilitation of sanitary sewer pipes by CIPP (Cured-In-Place-Pipe) lining. During the lining process, a flexible tube is pulled into the pipe through a manhole. As hot water circulates through the tube, the tube conforms to the shape of the host pipe and hardens. The inside of the cured pipe is smooth and resembles PVC pipe. Service connections are re-established by cutting holes from the inside of the pipe with a small piece of equipment.
The majority of pipes to be lined are located in the Alameda Road area and the UPRR property near NOP Park . There have been four collapsed pipes in this area over the past few months. Some of these concrete pipes were installed prior to 1940 and have been damaged by hydrogen sulfide gas. Repair of the collapsed pipes has been expensive and difficult due to the depth of the pipes, coordination with UPRR, and the location of sewer pipes beneath UPRR power poles.
Disruption to the public is minimal during a CIPP project. Sewer service will not typically be affected. The majority of work can be performed during the daytime, although some pipes may be lined at night when the sewer flow is low. CIPP lining will begin on December 14 th and will be completed in mid-January 2010.
