Portneuf Valley Environmental Fair Illustrated Poem Entry Wins at National Level

A local child poet is being honored on the national stage.

Recently, Inkom Elementary second-grader Felicity Shaw’s entry into the 2019 Portneuf Valley Environmental Fair’s Illustrated Poem Contest took home second place in the American Chemical Society’s (ACS) nationwide competition in the kindergarten through second grade category.

"It's so cool,” said Felicity. “I was amazed when I found out it was for the whole country!"

“We’re very excited to see the hard work of one of our local students celebrated on a national level,” said Jenna Dohman, Co-Coordinator of the Portneuf Valley Environmental Fair. “I think this really demonstrates our community’s dedication to teaching future generations about environmental conservation, both in the classroom as well as through events like the Environmental Fair.”

Poets were asked to share their thoughts on the 2019 theme “Take Note: The Chemistry of Paper.” The 2019 Portneuf Valley Environmental Fair Illustrated Poem Contest was sponsored by the local section of the American Chemical Society at Idaho State University. First place winners in the kindergarten through 2nd grade and 3rd grade through 5th grade divisions were submitted for consideration in the national contest. In total, 34 ACS local sections submitted entries for the nationwide competition.
