The staff at the City of Pocatello Community Recreation Center is looking to get a start on training tomorrow’s swim instructors today.Recently, management at the center began accepting applications for their Youth Volunteer Program. Through the program, 12 to 15-year-olds will help swim lesson instructors with their classes. “For students, this will help each child get more swim time per class,” said Stacie VanKirk, Community Recreation Center Manager. “For our future instructors, the program will help individuals to develop their skills and hopefully see them move on to being paid instructors once they are 16-years-old and older.” Interested 12 to 15-year-olds will need to submit an application, including two letters of reference. Applicants must be able to swim at level three proficiency with the key skills being front and back float, front and back glide, front crawl with rotary breathing, backstroke and/or elementary backstroke, and be able to tread water.Training for selected youth costs $25 and will be held May 5 and May 12 from 1-4 p.m. Participants will receive a t-shirt.Following training, volunteers are invited to help instructors with swim lessons later this summer. The sessions are Monday through Thursday, June 4 through 14, June 18 through 28, July 9 through 19, and July 23 through August 2. Lessons are held every half-hour from 9 a.m. to noon and 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.For more information on how to apply, visit pocatello.us/579/Current-Activities.Completed applications are due April 20 and can be turned in at the Community Recreation Center, 144 Wilson Avenue, or by email via firstname.lastname@example.org.For more information on this program or any of the other services offered by the City of Pocatello Parks and Recreation Department, visit pocatello.us/pr.
