The holiday season will be getting an early start in Pocatello thanks to a visit from one of the country’s national symbols.

Friday, November 16, the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree will be making a stop in Pocatello. The Gate City is one of over 25 communities along the way that will host the “People’s Tree” as it makes the 3,000 mile journey to Washington D.C. An event will be held November 16 for the public to view the tree. The event will be free to the public and details will be announced as the date approaches.

“Hosting the nation’s Christmas tree is a great honor for our community,” said Mayor Brian Blad. “I hope everyone will make plans to come out and see the tree as it travels east. It’s a sight you won’t want to miss.”

The theme for the 2018 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree is “Find Your Trail!” in recognition of two 2018 anniversaries: the 50th anniversary of the National Trails System Act and the 175th commemoration of the Oregon Trail. In November, the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree will travel eastward from Oregon on the reverse path of the Oregon Trail

The Willamette National Forest in partnership with nonprofit partner Choose Outdoors and Travel Oregon will bring the tree from Oregon to Washington, D.C. for the 2018 season.
