The Pocatello Police Department and local first responders will be holding a mock critical incident and reunification exercise March 28.
At approximately 12:30 p.m., students at Grace Lutheran High School will be evacuated from the school. After all the students have been evacuated from the school, the critical incident portion will begin. During this part of the exercise, residents will see an increase in emergency response personnel in the area. Residents may also hear what sounds like gunfire and loud bangs.
Following the students’ evacuation, a mock reunification drill will be held at Holt Arena on the campus of Idaho State University. Students will be bussed to Holt Arena from the school and proceed through the reunification process to their parents or guardians.
“This type of training is vital to helping see how an actual emergency situation may unfold,” said Officer Zachary Bartschi. “Afterwards, we will be able to look back and find what went well as well as how all participants can improve their response.”
The day of the exercise signs will be placed on Memorial Drive, East Bonneville Street, Way to Grace, Olympus Drive, and Baldy Avenue alerting motorists to the training. The exercise should be completed around 5 p.m.
Organizations participating in the exercise include the Pocatello Police and Fire Departments, Grace Lutheran High School, Portneuf Medical Center, Idaho State University, and other first responders.
Residents with questions about the exercises can contact Officer Bartschi at 208-234-6100.
